Catalog System

Numbering

I started cataloging my pieces in 1990, to maintain some semblance of order in the accumulating sheets of manuscript paper.  I started with JSD-1 and am now past JSD-300 and have my sights set on JSD-500.  In the listings on this site, I give the catalog number with each title for two reasons: first, to reduce chances of error if you ask me for a certain piece and, second, so you have some idea as to whether this is an earlier or later composition.

For many years I used the MusicProse notation software, a baby brother to Finale. This produced good basic notation which I sometimes marked up by hand, although the result is quite readable.  Now I use Sibelius 2, since this is the program my publisher uses.  The quality of the output is excellent.  I’ll let you be the judge about the quality of the music.

Difficulty Rating

Where no rating is given, pieces are of intermediate standard, within the capability of a competent musician or choir.  Some pieces marked "easy" are sight-readable for trained musicians, or are useful for teaching purposes.  Pieces described as "advanced" have been written for professional musicians and require mastery of instrument or voice.
